One reason why online registration for new Scouts is so important!

Welcome-to-Cub-Scouts-featuredToday, the number one form of communication is email.  When parents register their child for Scouting online, we immediately capture their email address.  When an application is submitted on paper, sometimes the print is not legible or the email address can be mistyped.  For effective communications, it is crucial to have this information correct.

Not only does the Old North State Council send communications to Scouting volunteers and Scouting families, the National Office also sends emails to parents or volunteers who signed up for a Cub Scout pack using online registration.

The email is designed to feel welcoming to all members of the family, meaning parents of Cub Scout boys will see images of boy Cub Scouts, while parents of Cub Scout girls will see images of girl Cub Scouts.

If your new scouts are not signing up for your pack or troop online, please log into My.Scouting.org and update your roster and be sure that email addresses are correct.  The key three members of your unit (Scoutmaster/Cubmaster, Committee Chairman and Chartered Representative) have access to these tools.  They can also grant other members of the unit access to these tools using “Organization Security Manager” in My.scouting.

Do you have Scouts looking for community service hours?

Scouts and Scouters:

An organization will donate bikes to several schools in Guilford County as part of the Bikes for Kids program. The Guilford County Schools administration is asking partners like Scouting to provide volunteers (teenage Scouts, parents, and adult leaders) that can help assemble bikes on Dec. 5, 6, 7 and 8. The goal is to assemble bikes and distribute them to students in mid-December before the holiday break. Guilford County Schools administration will provide instructions, tools, space to assemble, and storage of the bikes.

Click here to sign-up as a volunteer for this project (and earn community service hours as well!). More information (including location of the bike assembly) on this project will be shared with volunteers after they sign-up.

Thank you for your consideration!

BeAScout.org

We are hearing wonderful things from the Cub Scout Packs using online registration to sign up new Cub Scouts!  Utilizing this handy tool means less time chasing applications, collecting money, and dropping-off applications in-person to the Council Service Center!

To access and implement the online registration system, please follow the steps listed below. Each unit’s Key 3 (unit top leader, committee chairman, and charter organization representative) have access to the system.

Follow these easy steps:

  1. Go to my.scouting.org and log in.
  2. Select Menu, Select Legacy Web Tools, Select BeAScout
  3. Select Unit Pin Management, use the drop-down menu to select your unit
  4. Change your Unit Pin Mode from Council to Unit, change your pin status to active, and then set your apply status to active.  Update your meeting information, contact information, and additional information as needed.
  5. SAVE ALL CHANGES

If you would like your new parent to receive an automated welcome email message to go along with the Chief Scout Executive’s message, you may do so by setting your unit’s configurations:

  1. In my.scouting.org, click on Menu
  2. Select Organization Manager, then settings and select opt-in and type your message, click commit to save.  From the Organization Manager, you will also be able to indicate if your Pack will be welcoming girls to your Pack.
  3. Next, get the URL or QR code to send to your parents to register online. This can be accessed by clicking on Menu, select Invitation Manager from the drop-down list, click on URL at the top right-hand side of the screen.  Copy the URL to paste on your unit’s website or in an email or take a photo of the QR code or print it on a flyer for parents to scan.

The Invitation Manager is used to review online inquiries from scouts interested in joining your pack.  The Application Manager is used to approve online applications from scouts applying to join your Pack.

If you need assistance with BeAScout, do not hesitate to contact the Council Scout Office.

October 5, 2018

1Please read this important message and  “Implementation Details for Scouts BSA” (with FAQs) from the BSA National Office.

On February 1, 2019, the Boy Scouts of America will begin admitting girls into Scouts BSA (formerly the Boy Scout program).

One of the characteristics of Scouting—for over a hundred years—is that no matter when you join, however long you stay, or the rank you attain, the Scouting experience prepares you for life.  And for some, the pinnacle of their Scouting experience is achieving the highest rank of Eagle Scout.

The policies of the BSA indicate that, except in extraordinary circumstances, a youth desiring to achieve the rank of Eagle must do so before the youth’s 18th birthday.  This will continue to be our policy.

It is in the interests of the entire BSA, and in fact our nation, that all girls who join the BSA in 2019 should have an opportunity to earn their Eagle Scout rank should they diligently and promptly complete all requirements.

Accordingly, after carefully considering recommendations from stakeholders, including feedback from volunteers and professionals at the 2018 Top Hands Meeting, the National Executive Committee of the Boy Scouts of America has approved the attached temporary transition rules regarding extensions for youth over 16 but not yet 18 years of age on February 1, 2019 to complete the requirements for the Eagle Scout award.

To preserve the integrity of the Eagle Scout Award, no exceptions to or waivers of any of the requirements for the Eagle Scout Award are permitted under this limited exception, and all requirements must be completed while the individual is a registered member of Scouts BSA, or after achieving the First-Class Rank in Scouts BSA (as specified in the BSA Advancement Guide).

Please review the document and FAQ for further information. Additional questions or comments can be emailed to BSANatlCommunications@scouting.org

Youth Protection Training

yptThe health and safety of our Scout family is our greatest priority.  Youth Protection training is one of the most important means of providing that safe environment.  We use our Youth Protection policies and procedures to provide a safe place for our Scouts.  Youth Protection training provides our adult leadership with the knowledge and resources to help achieve that.

BSA went live in February with an all new Youth Protection training program.  The new program is significantly different from the previous program, providing us with new knowledge and tools to help protect our youth.  The Barriers to Abuse, that have been so much a part of our programs for many years,  have been revised considerably, with new policies in place to protect our youth.  The reporting process has also changed somewhat.  We all owe it to our Scouts to know and understand these policies and procedures.

Any registered adult who had not taken the updated Youth Protection training by midnight on September 30, was changed to an expired Youth Protection training status.  Our council percentage of those trained has plummeted from above 95% to only 50%.  Having expired Youth Protection training jeopardizes the adult leader liability insurance. Adult leaders will be unable to recharter/re-register with their units in 2019 if they are not Youth Protection trained by 2018 year-end.

There have been a number of people who have had issues completing the training online.  This is partly due to the volume of people trying to access the system on September 30 or October 1.  If you were unable to get on at that time, please try again.   Other technological glitches have also created some issues.  If you have any issues completing the training online, please contact BSA Customer Service at 972.580.2489.  They are very helpful and can usually get your issues corrected within just a few minutes.

If general questions about Youth Protection training or issues with completing it, please contact Nita Grubbs at nita.grubbs@scouting.org or at the Scout office at 336.378.9166.

Remember:  YOUth Protection Begins with YOU!

2November 3: Scout Day with the Wake Forest Demon Deacons

A note from Jackson Hamilton, Wake Forest contact person for Scout Day:

I would like to thank all that made it for the Scout Day game against Rice. I know there is plenty to do on a Saturday and it means a lot that more than 200 of you made it out to support the Deacs. It was a big win and must’ve been the good luck all the scouts brought!

Due to the excellent turnout, we would like to do the offer again for the game against Syracuse on November 3rd. It is homecoming and we should have a great crowd. Game time TBA.

Tickets will be $15 in advance for scouts friends and family. The same location for folks at the gate is $50, so please consider coming out again.

For all those who didn’t get a scout patch, it can be picked up near section 2 at the sales table on the west concourse during the Syracuse game before the end of halftime.

I’ve attached the Scout Day Order Form, but you are welcome to call me directly if you’d like to place an order over the phone. 336-758-4036
