Volunteer for Scouting!

jenvideo

Most people don’t volunteer because they’ve never been asked. For Jen Theisen, an invitation from the Scoutmaster of her son’s troop to volunteer moved her from the back of the room to the one helping lead the adventure. Watch her Scouting story.

Scouts BSA

Excited girls and families throughout Old North State Council are saying “Scout Me In!” There are more than 25 prospective Girl Troops throughout our Council in various stages of development for the February 1, 2019 official launch date.  Resources about Scouts BSA can be found here.  For volunteers interested in starting a Girl Troop, please contact your District Executive.

Updating Your Unit Pin for BeAScout.org

Units, we need your help!  Potential Scouts are looking for you, be sure that your Unit’s pin is active and your contact information and meeting schedule is updated on beascout.org.  To access and implement the online registration system, please follow the steps listed below. Each unit’s Key 3 (unit top leader, committee chairman, and charter organization representative) have access to the system.

Follow these easy steps:

  1. Go to my.scouting.org and log in.
  2. Select Menu, Select Legacy Web Tools, Select BeAScout
  3. Select Unit Pin Management, use the drop-down menu to select your unit
  4. Change your Unit Pin Mode from Council to Unit, change your pin status to active, and then set your apply status to active.  Update your meeting information, contact information, and additional information as needed.
  5. SAVE ALL CHANGES

Setting your units configurations in Organization Manager:

  1. In my.scouting.org, click on Menu
  2. From the Organization Manager, units will be able to indicate if their Pack will be welcoming girls. You can also opt to send a personalized welcome message to parents that register for your Pack online.
  3. Next, get the URL or QR code to send to prospective parents to register online. This can be accessed by clicking on Menu, select Invitation Manager from the drop-down list, click on URL at the top right-hand side of the screen.  Copy the URL to paste on your unit’s website or in an email or take a photo of the QR code or print it on a flyer for parents to scan.

The Invitation Manager is used to review online inquiries from scouts interested in joining your Pack.
The Application Manager is used to approve online applications from scouts applying to join your Pack.

Unit Charter Renewal

Charter renewal instructions and 2019 Charter Renewal access codes for the online system have been emailed to the Key 3 members of each Pack, Troop, Crew, and Ship that renews in January.  The online Charter Renewal system will be available on December 1 for January units.

Don’t forget! All leaders must have the new Youth Protection Training to complete the Charter Renewal.  If you or any of your leaders have not completed the NEW Youth Protection Training, get updated and trained today at my.scouting.org

Now is a good time to:

  • Check your Pack, Troop, Crew or Ship’s current roster in My.Scouting.org.  If there are scouts or adults attending meetings and they are not listed on your roster, have them complete a membership application and submit it to the Council for registration as soon as possible so they will be in the system when it is time for you to start the rechartering process.
  • Follow up with leaders that need to update their Youth Protection Training. (Leader’s training status can be checked at My.scouting.org under the “Training Manager” link
  • Log in to My.Scouting.org and ensure that email addresses are correct for the Key 3 (Chartered Representative, Committee Chairman and Scoutmaster/Cubmaster/Crew Advisor/Skipper)
  • Inform parents and volunteers that you will be collecting registration fees for renewal in the upcoming weeks.  Membership is $33, Insurance is $1 and Boy’s Life Magazine is $12

If you need assistance with the Charter Renewal process, please reach out to your Unit Commissioner or click here for more information.

Second Chance Popcorn Sale

Did your Pack, Troop, or Crew raise enough money during this fall’s popcorn sale to deliver a quality Scouting program in 2018-19? Are you a new or rebuilding Scouting program (unit) that was unable to participate in the earlier popcorn sale?

To support your unit, we are excited to announce a special “Second Chance Sale!”

The Old North State Council has been asked by various units for an additional opportunity to sell popcorn.  We understand the two storms that impacted our area eliminated many Show ‘N’ Sell days and disrupted the overall popcorn sale.

The Council office has product on-hand to assist units that wish to conduct a popcorn sale between November 27 – December 17, 2018. Our goal is to help each of you provide the funding and resources necessary to deliver a quality Scouting experience for the youth and families of your Pack, Troop, or Crew.

Here is how the Second Chance Sale will work:

  • Timeline for the sale is Tuesday, November 27 – Monday, December 17, 2018.
  • Sale will be Show ‘N’ Sell only.
  • Visit the Council Office located at 1405 Westover Terrace in Greensboro to check out product. You can check out full cases or individual pieces.
  • Available product will be distributed while supplies last.
  • All leftover product that units have from this Second Chance Sale is to be returned to the Council office no later than 5:00pm on Monday, December 17.
  • Money from this sale will be due to the Council office no later than 5:00pm on Friday December 28, 2018.
  • Participating units will receive 30% commission on all sales.
  • Prizes will not be part of the Second Chance Sale.

Participating in the Second Chance Sale will support Scouts and families in your unit with:

  • Paying for 2019 Summer Camp fees (Cub Scout camp, Webelos Camp, Scout Troop Resident Camp).
  • Paying 2019 Recharter/Re-registration fees for each youth and adult registered in BSA.
  • Paying for youth advancements in your unit.
  • Paying for unit activities for youth and adults in your unit.
  • Paying for Scouting program supplies and equipment.

Remember, payment on final popcorn invoices (not including Second Chance Sale) are due by December 7

Thank you for all you do for Scouting- and for your efforts to make this year’s popcorn sale a success for Scouts, leaders, and families!

Yours In Scouting,

Matthew Lanouette | Field Director

Holiday Giving Tree

We are excited that The Holiday Giving Tree program has returned again this year.  The Old North State Scout Shop is providing an opportunity for the Scouting community to help local Scout members who may be in need of uniforms and uniform items.  The program runs through December 20.  Attached is a form for units to fill out and submit to the Scout Shop for Scouts who would benefit from donations.  This is due by Monday, December 3.

We need your assistance to make this project a success. Please contact the store staff by email at oldnorthstatescoutshop@scouting.org if you have any questions or concerns.

Thank you for your help with this holiday project, and if you can, come by and help grant the wishes of some great kids!

It’s almost Charter Renewal Time

Alamance, Guilford, and Uwharrie District Charter Renewal is due in January of each year.  Akela and Cherokee District’s annual Charter Renewal is due in February.  (Most, but not all Units follow this schedule, there are a few exceptions) If the annual Charter Renewal is your responsibility for your Pack, Troop, Crew or Ship, we would like to thank you for your service!

The online Charter Renewal system will be available on December 1 for January units and January 1 for February Units.  At the end of November, units will receive rechartering instructions and their 2019 Charter Renewal access code for the online system.  These instructions will be emailed to the Key 3 members of each Pack, Troop, Crew, and Ship.

Don’t forget! All leaders must have up-to-date Youth Protection Training to complete the Charter Renewal.

Ben demonstrated leadership of the highest caliber!  Kudos to Parker Stewart and Robbie Hanlon who were a force in the Trading Post and served with distinction!  Thank you to all the shooting sports staff, climbing staff, and all the volunteers who served a program area!  The Scouts benefitted from your involvement.
